Less than two weeks after appealing a judge's decision not to release her from Dr. Luke's purview, Kesha has shared a disturbing message on social media about an alleged offer she received if she was willing to rescind her allegations against the producer.
“So. I got offered my freedom IF i were to lie,” the pop singer wrote alongside a selfie on Sunday (April 3). “I would have to APOLOGIZE publicly and say that I never got raped. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS behind closed doors. I will not take back the TRUTH. I would rather let the truth ruin my career than lie for a monster ever again.”
It was unclear at press time who made the alleged offered to Kesha, but the singer sued in 2014 to record music outside her six-album contract with producer Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald, aka Dr. Luke, whom she claims raped her in 2005. She further alleged that the Grammy-winning producer had been physically and emotionally abusive to her during their 10-year working relationship. The producer fired back with a defamation claim, claiming the pop star was fabricating the allegations to get out of her contract.
In February, New York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich denied a preliminary injunction that would have allowed her to record outside of Dr. Luke's purview (Kesha's contract with Luke extends to a partnership his label, Kemosabe Records, has with Sony Music, although Sony has maintained, via a representative, that it “is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party"). Kesha filed paperwork in late March that was intended to have a New York appellate court weigh in on her dispute with the producer.
Dr. Luke has presented Kesha’s claims as financially-motivated and has cited a deposition taken in June 2011 wherein Kesha contradicted what she would later claim in her lawsuit against Luke: She swore under oath that Luke never coerced her into sex. “Dr. Luke never made sexual advances at me,” Kesha testified. In a Billboard magazine story dated March 19, Kesha's mother, Pebe Sebert, claims her daughter was "a prisoner" -- emotionally, physically and financially abused by Dr. Luke.
Responding to Kesha's Instagram post, a representative for Dr. Luke tells Billboard:
"Kesha’s Instagram posting is false. The Court repeatedly stated Kesha is already free to record without Dr. Luke, and that she had not presented any facts supporting her claims. That's because all the evidence - including Kesha's own videotaped sworn testimony - show her allegations are false. The only thing Kesha is not free to do is to continue to lie about Dr. Luke through publicity stunts and outrageous smears, ignoring the fact that by her own free will she went to work and entered into new contracts with Dr. Luke years after this 'incident' supposedly happened. Her goal all along has been solely personal enrichment by seeking to break contracts that brought her success and millions so she can enter into more lucrative ones. We look forward to our day in court holding Kesha accountable for her lies."
