Move on, Elena!
With Mystic Falls still off limits for vampires, Elena and her supernatural pals grieve in their own way separately.
Elena, now a college sophomore, decides to go into medicine. How plausible is that when her grades sucked so bad in high school?
Alaric, resurrected from the dead, teaches as a college professor. Dealing with being a new vampire, Alaric tries to keep Tyler from getting out of control in case he triggers that werewolf gene.
Meanwhile, Caroline has picnics with her mother outside the Mystic Falls border. Sheriff Forbes relays to Caroline that a vampire attacked two teenagers along the border, which seems odd considering the town's crime rate has dropped.
Little does Caroline know that the vampire is Elena, who has been dealing with Damon's death too lightly until audiences see that Elena has been using Luke to make some witchy herbs, so she can see Damon. But can Elena really see Damon, or are they hallucinations?
The side effect is that the herbs make Elena blood thirsty, which Elena justifies going into medicine, so she can score free blood.
Caroline and Elena attempt to get a hold of Stefan, who goes off grid to fix cars and move on with a new girl. After ignoring Elena's multiple calls, Stefan answers only to tell Elena to move on from Damon and that he has stopped looking for a solution.
Elena says goodbye to Damon and thanks him one last time before deciding to “let go” of him, but subconsciously she can't do so with Damon still lingering by.
Elsewhere, Jeremy grieves for Bonnie by making out with a random girl and playing video games, while Matt goes into training mode to protect the town.
With one call from Caroline, who pleads to Stefan that everyone is trying to grieve alone when they need each other, Stefan breaks his phone. Did Caroline just convince Stefan to come home?
When Alaric checks in on Elena, it's evident that control has been an issue for both of them with Alaric having a tough time with his thirst for blood and Elena's loss of control over seeing Damon. Elena proceeds to ask Alaric to compel her from ever falling for Damon.
At the end, fans get to see a glimpse of Damon and Bonnie enjoying pancakes together in harmonious fashion.
