Fans almost saw a lot more of Nicki Minaj then she intended at the Video Music Awards when she suffered a wardrobe malfunction — not that they would have complained.
The “Anaconda” singer, of course, had a very memorable costume catastrophe at the 2014 VMAs during her performance of “Bang Bang” with Jessie J and Ariana Grande, and now, several weeks after the near nip-slip, Nicki is revealing exactly what went down that night.
Sitting down with Ellen DeGeneres, who made a hilarious spoof of the rapper’s “Anaconda” video, Nicki explained that time — and a stubborn zipper — led to her little black dress drama.
“I had about 40 or 50 seconds to change from the ‘Anaconda’ outfit into the ‘Bang Bang’ outfit and I don’t know why … originally I was going to have a skirt wrapped around the green ['Anaconda' performance two-piece], but then when I realized that Jessie and Ariana were wearing black-and-white, I didn’t want to ruin the shot with me wearing a green bra and them wearing black-and-white,” she explained.
“So I was like, ‘I have to put on a black dress really quickly,’ and sure enough, we didn’t have a real quick change right there so it was literally my whole team standing there, holding curtains around me and it was pitch-black and I couldn’t see anything and right before it was time for me to walk out, they went to zip it up and nothing. And right there I thought I died.”
Nicki walked onto the stage flawlessly rapping her verse of the song, holding very tightly to her dress so nothing slipped out because, as she explained, fans would have gotten a whole other show if that happened.
“I didn’t have any underwear on — no underwear, no bra — ’cause I had just taken off the ‘Anaconda’ outfit, so I was butt-ass naked,” she said.
Luckily Ellen, being the good friend that she is, gifted Nicki with a giant sparkly pin in case of a wardrobe emergency.
