Nina Davuluri will relinquish the Miss America crown Sunday night as some of the most beautiful and talented women in the nation vie for the coveted 2015 title. The glamorous event will take place at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where it has been held for the past two years.
The show will air on ABC, but for those who do not have access to a television, live stream footage of the event can be seen here. Users will have to log in with their TV provider, so make sure login information is ready. Don’t miss the pre-show fun at 8 p.m. EDT and the live show at 9 p.m. to see which lovely lady becomes Miss America 2015.
Controversy erupted last year when the New York contestant was crowned the winner, with some people pelting the beauty pageant winner with racist insults. Davuluri was the first Indian American to win and some people on Twitter were upset an “Arab” woman won. The main problem with this, other than the blatant racism, is that people from India considered Asian and not of Arab descent.
Davuluri was also the second New York contestant to win the title in as many years. In 2013, Mallory Hytes Hagan of New York was crowned the winner of Miss America.
The Miss America pageant started more than 75 years ago in Atlantic City with the goal of electing a spokeswoman to educate Americans on issues that affect them and also to participate in charity work. Miss America, however, is not to be confused with Miss USA, a different pageant that started in 1952. The winner from that competition goes on to compete in Miss Universe. Another difference is Miss America was founded as a scholarship program while Miss USA was founded by Catalina Swimsuits as a promotional tool.
