Sonia Kruger and partner Craig McPherson ‘over the moon’ to confirm they are expecting their first child

BIG Brother host Sonia Kruger has revealed she’s about to welcome a “new housemate”, confirming she is expecting her first child at 48.

The Channel 9 favourite and her TV exec partner Craig McPherson said they were “over the moon” to go public with the happy news, confident in the pregnancy at the 16-week stage.

While McPherson is father to six from a previous relationship, Kruger has shared the pain of the couple’s attempts — natural and via IVF — to add to the family, enduring the grief and disappointment of miscarriage.

In a touching announcement posted on her social media accounts, Kruger — who turns 49 next week — wrote: “Hey everybody, here’s a fun fact — I’m having a baby #overjoyed #newhousemate.”

The happy news was delivered with an adorable snapshot of her in designer heels beside a pair of kitty-print baby socks.

In a statement Kruger said: “It has been a long road but Craig and I are delighted to finally confirm we are having a baby.

At 16 weeks pregnant, I am over the moon and feel I am now able to share the happy news.

“With (Mornings co-host) David Campbell and his wife Lisa expecting twins it looks like we’ll have our own Mornings ensemble next year.”

Kruger is understood to have been celebrating her joy with family on the Gold Coast yesterday after attending a charity lunch for the Red Cross.

Her workload is about to double, with the launch of a new season of Big Brother to air from September 8.

The expectant couple, who met when working together on Seven’s Today Tonight, persevered with their plans despite many setbacks.

Kruger has previously admitted having their own child had been a struggle. ‘‘We did conceive naturally several times and I miscarried on a couple of occasions,’’ she said in 2012.

“We tried IVF and it wasn’t successful. The doctors were very clear with me, too, that for women over the age of 45, which was the age we attempted IVF, the success rate is zero.

“You still believe it can happen, you see stories and you think ‘maybe that can happen for us’, but the odds are definitely very slim.”

She also told fellow TV personality Deborah Hutton in 2012 she still had hope. “I don’t know if I have accepted it ... I think I still think that I will wake up and someone will have left a baby on my doorstep — so if anyone wants to do that, feel free.”

Within minutes of Kruger announcing her news on Twitter yesterday, friends, fans and colleagues wished the fun-loving television personality well.

Kruger is among only a handful of high-profile women to become pregnant past the age of 45.

Others include Collette Dinnigan, who gave birth to her second child at 46, and Deborah Thomas, who fell pregnant at 45.

Prominent Sydney gynaecologist at Westmead Hospital Dr Andrew Pesce concedes that pregnancy at Kruger’s age is very “uncommon” and difficult to achieve. “That’s at the upper level of the patients I’ve seen,” Dr Pesce said.

Mornings co-host Campbell told The Sunday Telegraph: ‘‘When Sonia told me that she was pregnant, I laughed and cried at the same time — I admit it.

‘‘I couldn’t be happier that my best mate is having a baby.

‘‘She is, I am — Mornings will need a creche.”

Seven news reader Chris Bath said: “Jim and I are beyond delighted for Sonia and Craig, and can’t wait to meet the new arrival.”
