A shooting instructor died Monday night after being accidently shot by a 9-year-old girl firing a fully automatic weapon at a gun range near the Arizona-Nevada border.
According to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, Charles Vacca, 39, of Lake Havasu City, died at a Las Vegas hospital from a gunshot wound to the head after a 9-mm Uzi recoiled while in the hands of the young girl from New Jersey who was visiting the shooting range with her parents.
According to the sheriff’s office, Vacca was instructing the girl on the use of the machine pistol, first set in single-shot mode. After Vacca set the gun on fully automatic, the girl squeezed the trigger and the recoil sent the gun climbing upward and to the left, directly in the direction of Vacca, who was less than a foot away.
Vacca was airlifted from Bullets and Burgers gun range, the scene of the 10 a.m. shooting, to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he was pronounced dead Monday night.
Bullets and Burgers is near U.S. Highway 93 near White Hills, between Kingman and Hoover Dam at an area known as Arizona Last Stop. Bullets and Burgers, according to its website, offers guests “the opportunity to fire a wide range of fully automatic machine guns and specialty weapons.” The privately owned business offers adventure packages for visitors to Las Vegas as well as other clients.
An autopsy will be performed by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
