Rumblings of trouble in paradise have plagued Mariah Carey, 44, and Nick Cannon, 33, since their wedding in 2008 after just two months of dating, but the couple has always refuted divorce rumors during the course of their six-year marriage.
In May, Cannon spoke to Parade about the ongoing tabloid rumors, saying: “There’s no merit or truth to it. It’s kind of humorous, really. It couldn’t be further off from the truth, and it really affects the credibility of the so-called newspapers.”
Now, the America’s Got Talent host is singing a different tune, telling the Insider With Yahoo that reports of the couple’s recent separation are true.
“We have been living in separate houses for a few months,” Cannon said. “(Right now) my main focus is my kids.”
The couple reportedly separated back in May and have been secretly working out a property settlement and custody agreement over their three-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with their lawyers, according to TMZ, which also reported that the divorce plans are a “done deal.”
A source tells E! News that the singer is devastated by the split.
“She is heartbroken,” the source said. “This has been going on for months. It has a lot to do with Nick’s career choices. He does not have to work, but he’s been throwing himself into gigs and projects.”
Cannon is the host of America’s Got Talent and is regularly on the road for his various DJ gigs.
Another point of contention reportedly includes Cannon’s March radio show confession to Howard Stern about sleeping with celebrities, specifically that he hooked up with reality star Kim Kardashian.
“Are you kidding me this is L.A.? That’s the whole purpose of it, you have sex with actresses, singers, models,” he said during the interview.
Carey met Cannon when he co-directed her music video for her song, “Bye Bye,” on an island off the coast of Antigua in 2008. Two months later, on April 30, 2008, they tied the knot at her private estate on Windermere Island in The Bahamas.
After celebrating their one-year anniversary in 2009, Cannon gushed to Parade about his marriage to Carey.
“Every single morning I turn over and look at the most beautiful woman in the world next to me and say, ‘How in the hell did I get her?’ I don’t believe in luck, but I feel like I’m one of the luckiest men in the world. I think one of the things about our relationship is the way we instantly connected. We both have a youthful spirit. We both enjoy life. We’re both extremely optimistic. Aside from that, there’s the fact that she’s Mariah Carey. How can I not fall in love with her? It was one of those things where I went, ‘This is a woman I can give and will give 100% of myself to.’”
