Miley Cyrus' VMAs date Jesse Helt has warrant out for his arrest due to violating probation

The pop star's date to the MTV awards show has had several run-ins with the law, including a 2010 arrest for breaking into an apartment.

Miley Cyrus' date to the MTV VMAs is in trouble with the law.

Jesse Helt, the 22-year-old Oregon man who accepted the pop star's award for Video of the Year at Sunday's show, has a warrant out for his arrest, an Oregon court official divulged to "Inside Edition."

Helt was arrested for attempting to break into an apartment in his hometown of Salem, Ore., in 2010, and was charged with criminal trespassing and criminal mischief, according to court documents obtained by the show.

The documents also said that Helt repeatedly violated his probation for other infractions including marijuana use, breaking curfew and failing to report to his probation officer.

Helt's identity was revealed Monday by Oregon Live, which got in touch with his mother, Linda, after her son made international headlines for attending the VMAs with Cyrus.

In her interview with the site, she said that the "Wrecking Ball" singer, who had met Helt through the organization My Friend's Place, had given him money to fly home to visit his family.

She also said that she was happy that her son was receiving positive attention from his role in Cyrus' VMAs moment.

"He was at the right place at the right time," she said. "It's time for him to have some good luck."

Cyrus has yet to comment directly about Helt's legal issues. But she did issue a series of tweets that seemed to touch on her friend's brushes with the law.

"People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included," she wrote Tuesday. "I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it."

"Does looking down upon the homeless help people excuse their inaction?" she added.
