Apple responds to iOS 8 glitches with update

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple released an update to an update late Thursday, asking users of its mobile devices to install iOS 8.0.2 after a series of issues with 8.0.1.

Apple's highly trumpeted iOS 8 was immediate hampered by reports that its first update affected some users' cellular service as well as the functionality of the iPhone's Touch ID system.

The first update to iOS 8 rolled out on Wednesday as a fix for various problems associated with the company's new HealthKit app on both its phones and tablets. But shortly thereafter some iPhone users reported on Twitter that they were having issues with cell service. Apple then pulled the 8.0.1 update.

In a statement late Thursday, the company apologized "for inconveniencing the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who were impacted by the bug in iOS 8.0.1."

The iOS 8.0.2 list of fixes includes not just an apparent solution for the loss of cellular connectivity, Touch ID access and HealthKit issue, but also:

- An issue where 3rd party keyboards could become deselected when a user enters their passcode.

- An issue that prevented some apps from accessing photos from the Photo library.

- Improves the reliability of the Reachability feature on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (which makes an image small with a double-tap of the Touch ID button.

- Fixes an issue that could cause unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS/MMS messages.

- Better support of Ask To Buy for Family Sharing for In-App Purchases.

- Fixes an issue where ringtones were sometimes not restored from iCloud backups.

- Fixes a bug that prevented uploading photos and videos from Safari.
