Though the beginning of 2013 was marked by myriad triumph for Anne Hathaway as awards were being heaped upon her for her performance in Les Misérables, it’s also when Hathahate was at its most fervent.
In a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Hathaway told her side of the story, remembering her reaction when she came across an article that asked why everyone hates her. “I was in crisis,” she said. “Now I’d be fine. I really would be. I’d let it roll off my back, but at the time I was still partly Fantine. I was still identifying with being a victim.”
Hathaway talked about her experience at the Golden Globes, when she gave an awkward acceptance speech—first word: “blergh”—and later took the mic when Les Misérables won for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. As for the moment during the film’s win, Hathaway, who had forgotten to thank her manager, said: “While everyone was still getting onstage, I spoke. I should have gone after everyone else. I own that; it was rude. People saw that as grabby, I guess. I don’t know.” Hathaway also explained the story behind her last-minute Oscar dress, which also became a target because it appeared to put her nipples on display, a fact of which she was aware. “I look in the mirror, turn to [husband] Adam [Shulman], and say, ‘It looks like my nipples are hard.’ He says, ‘You look beautiful. Your nipples look pointy. The red carpet’s about to close. We gotta go,'” she said.
Hathaway hate was so strong that the precise reason it was analyzed by publications ranging from BuzzFeed to the New York Times to The Cut to Salon. Following the Oscars, Hathaway retreated from the public spotlight, which she is now returning to to promote Interstellar. Bazaar enlisted George Lois—the man who turned Muhammad Ali into Saint Sebastian for Esquire— was the creative director on Hathaway’s cover. The theme? “Kiss and make up.” Well, have you?
