Hear Lorde's new 'Hunger Games' soundtrack single, 'Yellow Flicker Beat'

Lorde has released “Yellow Flicker Beat,” her new single that appears on the soundtrack for upcoming blockbuster The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1. The soundtrack is set for a Nov. 18 release.

Many elements of “Yellow Flicker Beat” sound like the Lorde we know and love (or hate): She still has a penchant for the multi-tracked vocals, anthemic choruses, and meandering melodies that made “Royals” and “Tennis Court” hits. But the new track also lacks the unique rhythmic approach that made Lorde’s prior songs so fun. “Yellow Flicker Beat” is a banger and sounds tailor-made for a blockbuster—meaning most of it resembles the generic epic fare designed to underscore a major battle or ending credits.

The soundtrack’s song listing is still under wraps, but the franchise’s track record promises for a good record. Previous contributors to the Hunger Games soundtracks include Arcade Fire, Kid Cudi, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, The National, and Of Monsters and Men.
