Following a solid debut, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes maintains its reign at the box office this weekend, beating out the R-rated Sex Tape and The Purge: Anarchy.
In its second weekend, Apes earned $36 million to top the North American box office for its second-straight week, and brought its domestic total to nearly $139 million.
The Purge: Anarchy, Universal's sequel to last year's sleeper hit, opened with $28.4 million, down from the $34.1 million the original scared up on opening weekend. However, Anarchy, which imagines an America where all crime is legal for 12 hours every year, was made for only $9 million, so it was an immediate success for the studio.
The animated Planes: Fire & Rescue debuts at #3 with $18 million. It's the sequel to 2013's Cars-offshoot, Planes. Sony's Sex Tape opened with $15 million for fourth place. It stars Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz as a married couple who makes a pornographic home video to spice of their love life... but it leaks. And finally, Transformers: Age of Extinction rounds out the top 5 with $10 million and $227 million domestically to date.
That's a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of The Rock's Hercules, the Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton comedy And So It Goes, and the Scarlett Johansson sci-fi, Lucy.
